Try us out today!Like many of you give or take a million I watched AMC’s "The Talking Dead" Sunday just to see CM Punk make his first TV appearance since walking out of WWE.
(Well, OK, I didn’t watch. I’m behind on "The Walking Dead," so I fake oakleys warily skimmed Twitter and read recaps.)
It felt weird. It was like spying the friend who moved to another town happily going about his new life, your teary goodbye totally forgotten.
It also made me realize just how different it is to disappear from wrestling in 2014 than any time previously. Different, in that you don’t disappear at all. CM Punk has been gone from WWE since late January but he’s popped up several times since cageside with Dana White, in the studio with Madball, and yes, even on TV again. Ultimate Warrior returning to Parts Unknown this is not.
But mostly, seeing Punk again made me think about the permanence of him being gone. And when a high profile wrestler falls out with WWE, their place in the company buy fake oakleys history books becomes a flashpoint for debate: About Vince McMahon’s personality, about the way WWE does business, about the value of that wrestler and whether WWE truly believed in him.
I’ve already written, if too briefly, about Punk’s legacy as a wrestler. This isn’t that. This is me asking how he’ll be remembered by WWE and its fans. More to the point, I guess the real question is this: Can WWE whitewash one of its wrestlers in 2014?
As I said, Punk has remained pretty visible since leaving WWE, and that’s without going out of his way to do so. Attending UFC shows, hanging out with hardcore bands and even guesting on "Talking Dead" are all things he did while he was a WWE superstar, so all he’s doing is continuing to live his life. What’s different is that we’re way more interested in watching him do so, now that we can’t see him drop pipe bombs and hit the GTS on a weekly basis.
That visibility and, of course, the WWE Network, with its wealth of Punk matches, would make any WWE effort to erase Punk’s name from its history kind of silly. But that isn’t stopping the company so far Monday, Punk was clipped from a package highlighting Undertaker’s WrestleMania wins. So maybe WWE will set a new standard in bullheaded spite.
That and all their speculated shots at Punk suggest that, barring a reconciliation or even a return, Punk is at least 10 years away from being mentioned on WWE TV without sneering revisionist history about his ring work and his fan support. As replica oakleys for his rightful WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony, I’d say that’s at least 15 years down the road.
Meanwhile, Punk will probably keep popping up, hanging out with his MMA friends and maybe even resuming his Twitter account. That’s why I’m intrigued to see how his fans remember him. They won’t they can’t forget so easily. It’s easy to guess how they’ll remember him as a performer: quite highly, as always. But what of his significance to WWE?
Punk may well have martyred www.cheappromdresses.us.com his career in protest of the company’s worst creative and business practices. The strength of his message, though, depends on WWE. The more they operate like the company that wanted to push Batista to the WrestleMania XXX main event, your opinion be damned, the better for Punk. The more they ask wrestlers to ruin themselves with 150 to 200 matches a year, many of which have no long term purpose whatsoever, the better for Punk. The more they subjugate the health and happiness of that talent to celebrities and celebrity culture tie ins, the better for Punk.
But the more WWE delivers like it has with Daniel Bryan the last two weeks, the better for everyone. Yes, the irony is that they reportedly did so in some part just to tell off Punk. Still, they made the fans happy. But can WWE keep them happy long enough to forget why Punk left?
